An acquaintance of mine threw a beer bottle at me and damaged my car, where should go from here?

I was driving down a street with a friend and he came flying up on my tail. I stopped my car and so did he, but I got out to beat his *** because he wouldnt leave me alone and he threw a half full beer bottle at me from his drivers door and missed me, but hit and dented the trunk door of my car, then immediatly sped off. I knew if I were to pound his face in he would just call the cops and get an ault charge on me as he has done before to 2 other friends of mine. I filed a police report with my penger as a witness, but have not yet pressed any charges on him if I ever decide to. I know everything about him, and he does not have auto insurance. Should I file a claim with my insurance or try to retain an attorney?
